The future of the Buchan Branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association still hangs in the balance with a call being made for supporters to ensure it can continue.

Following the AGM on September 21, it was decided to schedule an EGM.

This will take place on Tuesday, November 9 in Auchnagatt Village Hall at 7pm.

A spokesperson for the group said: “There’s no way to sugar coat this.

"Without a new committee, Buchan RDA will cease to exist.

"One possible option might be a merger with another regional group, but that would disadvantage riders from the Fraserburgh and Peterhead areas who would be required to travel long distances. "The best we can hope for is a good turnout at the EGM on November 9, to ensure that Buchan RDA has a future in the local area.”

Anyone who is interested in forming a committee and steering the group forwards is urged to attend the meeting.

This also applies to anyone who is in a position to support the group – in any way, shape or form.

Most importantly, potential office bearers and trustees must put their names forward to the current acting secretary before October 31.

The Trustees are responsible for the strategic direction and governance of the group, while the day-to-day running is delegated to the chairperson, secretary and treasurer.

Everyone is a volunteer.

Nationally, the RDA has been providing riding and carriage driving opportunities for over 50 years, for people with additional support needs.

Locally, the Buchan Branch of the RDA has offered horse-riding to adults and children for nearly 40 years.

The benefits of riding as a form of exercise are well-recognised by riders’ parents, families, teachers and carers.

Buchan RDA is based at Ladymire Equestrian Centre, just south of Ellon, where there is access to a purpose-built indoor school and an adequate selection of suitable horses and ponies.

There are also pleasant facilities for hacking out in good weather. Sessions run during term times only.
