Situated six miles from Turriff, Bridgend Aggregates is one of the main suppliers of crushed rock, bagged aggregates, specialist sands, gravels, decorative chips and ready-mix concrete within north-east Scotland.

Run by Wilson Strachan, alongside his daughter, Shannon Green and her husband, AJ, the family business has evolved greatly since the establishment nearly 30 years ago and this year are delighted to be the main sponsor of this year's Turriff Show.

“We cater for a large variety of sectors including construction, agriculture, equestrian, local authorities, sports and leisure, renewable energy, and the general public," highlights Shannon, who joined the family business in 2015.

“We are delighted to get the opportunity to sponsor an event like Turriff Show.

"Not only is it our local show but is the biggest two-day agricultural show in Scotland so for us, it’s a great opportunity to network with customers old and new as well as give back to the community.”

President of Turriff District Agricultural Association and the 2022 Turriff Show, Alan Gaul adds: “We are delighted that the Strachan family have come on board as main sponsor’s for Turriff Show.

"They had previously agreed to become main sponsor in 2020 prior to cancellation of the event due to Covid-19.

"We appreciate that many businesses over the last few years have been impacted by the pandemic so are hugely appreciative to Bridgend and all other sponsors for 2022.

"Without these businesses we wouldn’t be able to hold our show.”

Alongside the aggregates business the Strachan family run a large farming enterprise with 1750 acres situated across Turriff and Fraserburgh growing barley, wheat, and oilseed rape.

Previously, Wilson alongside wife Gerardine were also well known within the pedigree world of Simmental and Charolais cattle as well as Suffolk Sheep.

“We’ve been involved with different elements of the show for many years,” said Wilson, who started Bridgend Aggregates as an offshoot of the farming enterprise in the early 90s.

“Back in the early 2000’s we exhibited livestock and had a stand where we promoted black Irish heifers, we imported from Ireland to sell for breeding replacements.

"Since dispersing of the livestock, we have transitioned to support more from a construction angle and have supplied various products from the quarries to help improve the infrastructure around the showground.”

Now with a fleet of cement mixers, the main site at King Edward includes a sand, gravel, and rock quarry, SEPA registered waste disposal site, as well as a concrete plant which has recently been developed with the instalment of a new McCrory concrete batching plant.

The business has also become BSI kitemark registered for ready-mix concrete.

Shannon adds: “We have also recently installed a filter press to our wash plant, by combining the aqua cycle which is currently on the wash plant. "This means we are now able to recycle and clean the water used in the washing process and remove all settling ponds on site, creating a much safer working environment.”

Wilson concluded: “With permitted reserves until 2050, and the next generation heavily involved in the day to day running of the business, we hope to continue to develop the globally approved aggregate plant, ensuring a service which provides a sustainable source of quality materials for years to come for businesses locally and further afield."
