BOOKS Abroad, the Rhynie based charity which sends books to developing nations has recorded a first in its near 40 year history.

Earlier this month, the charity's first 40ft container was loaded and began the long journey to Kenya.

It was filled with 36 pallets -18 for St Paul's University in Limuru and another 18 for Shishukunj Int Project in Nairobi -100,000 books in total.

The charity worked with the family of the late Professor Robin Barbour, a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and Dean of the Chapel Royal whose wish it was for his extensive library collection to be sent to the university in Limuru where he taught divinity.

The library collection extended to three pallets and the balance of the consignment for Nairobi were books to aid students at the university.

The Shishukunj Project runs children's libraries as well as physical activities for children to help them reach their potential.

The shipment marked a major landmark for the charity whose activities were scaled back during the pandemic.

When rules allowed, volunteers continued to sort books as the warehouse base afforded plenty opportunity to socially distance.

However, the receipt of donations had to cease and even after rules eased, boxes of books delivered had to be left for at least 72 hours.
