Elgin future possible for Argos after St Giles Centre closure

Argos is “exploring all options” to remain in Elgin after the closure of the St Giles Centre, Moray’s MSP has been told.

Richard Lochhead, the area’s SNP MSP, met Argos representatives this week to discuss the business’ future in the town.

Argos indicated that they are considering a new store in Elgin.

He was told by director of estates management and investments, Jamie Cowen, that the company is looking to remain in Elgin.

Speaking after the meeting, Moray’s SNP MSP said: “The company regarded its Elgin store as well-used and popular with local shoppers and recognise the unexpected closure is a blow to their employees, the town centre, and their customers in Moray.

“I conveyed to Argos the importance of the company retaining a presence in Elgin and I was given reassurances that the firm is exploring all options to find suitable premises to allow them to reopen their doors here.”

Mr Lochhead, who announced in recent days that he will be stepping away from politics in 2026, added: “It’s vital local agencies pull out all the stops to help former tenants of the St Giles Centre who wish to remain in Elgin to identify suitable properties and support them with any refurbishment.

“Elgin BID and Moray Chamber are already putting in a shift on this and are to be commended for their efforts.”
