At their meeting on Thursday Aberdeenshire Council's Infrastructure Services Committee will prepare to feedback to the Scottish Government on restricting the use of single use plastics.

The Scottish Government are proposing to introduce market restrictions on single use plastics which are problematic for our environment, focussing particularly on litter polluting our beaches in line with a similar EU directive.

Single Use Plastic is a product which is made in whole or in part from plastic and not designed or intended to be used for it's purpose more than once in it's life span.

It is often hard to recycle.

Much of this plastic is being found in oceans and rivers as well as discarded on land and is contributing to a loss in biodiversity as well as general pollution and untidiness.

The primary aim of the proposal is to increase recyclability in product design as well as sustainably sourcing materials for new products.

As well as looking at how to reduce the number of single use plastic items on the market, the plan also highlights a need to increase the level of education around the impact of such materials and how everybody can do their bit.

If approved, restrictions would target the production and consumption of single-use plastic cutlery, crockery, straws, balloon sticks, food and beverage containers and oxo-degradable products.
