Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin has been announced as the convener of the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee at the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Martin was first elected in May 2016 and retained her seat in this year’s elections.

The Health Committee considers and reports on matters falling within the responsibility of the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, as well as matters relating to drug policy.

Ms Martin was formerly the convener for the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee which oversaw the updated Climate Change Bill and ambitions to reach net zero targets.

Commenting, Gillian Martin MSP said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as convener of the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee.

“This opportunity comes at a pivotal time in the health of our nation as we recover from the continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The work to be done by the committee in the term ahead cannot be underestimated and I look forward to working with my colleagues at the Scottish Parliament in a cross-party manner and I would like to say thank you to the clerks and wider team who have already given me a very detailed overview of the work ahead.

"It’s vital that parliament properly scrutinises the measures being taken by the Scottish Government and has the opportunity to improve legislation.

“I would like to also like to thank my fellow committee members and all the clerks who worked so hard on the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee.

"I plan to continue to support the work to meet our net zero targets as a constituency MSP representing an area which will see much transformation as part of the Just Transition.”
