Aberdeen Science Centre brings CSI to the north-east

Aberdeen Science Centre is set to offer the chance to step into the shoes of a forensic scientist with a series of crime scene investigation workshops and demonstrations as part of its summer activities programme.
The centre will take visitors to the scene of the crime, playing the role of a visiting technician to the ASC Crime Lab, which will host forensic science workshops including a range of exciting experiments.
The forensic scientists of the future will also be able to take part in the fun with several hands-on activities and storytelling sessions themed around observation in the Under-6s zone.
The exhibition floor will also receive a CSI style makeover with a mock crime scene that will sharpen the skills of any investigator out there, challenging them to crack a case that would leave Sherlock Holmes stumped.
Visitors can also take part in pop-up exhibitions including the CSI: On the Spot demonstrations with science centre staff.
Aberdeen Science Centre’s CSI themed activities will run throughout July and August, with normal opening times applying. It is recommended that tickets are purchased in advance to avoid disappointment.
Jessica Brooks, public and digital programme co-ordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “Our CSI activities will take our visitors right to the centre of an investigation, working in our crime lab and taking part in many interesting experiments.
“Summer at Aberdeen Science Centre will offer a forensic experience for all ages, including the budding young scientists out there, who can hone their spy skills in a number of activities that will put their skills to the test.
"We look forward to giving our visitors their first taste of the life of a crime scene investigator.”
Recently awarded five-star status by VisitScotland, Aberdeen Science Centre reopened to the public in November 2020 after a major project to create an aspirational facility which reflects the STEM priorities for both industry and education.
The centre’s exhibits are aimed at all ages and are themed into six zones: Energy; Space; Life Sciences; Make It, Test It; and the dedicated area for the under-6s, as well as the Shell Learning Zone, where science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are brought to life.
Aberdeen Science Centre’s £4.7 million redevelopment was made possible by generous support and funding from the Inspiring Science Fund – a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Wellcome - with additional funding provided by Opportunity North East (ONE) and Aberdeen City Council.
The project secured a further £1.5 million from funders and sponsors including OPITO, Shell, Equinor, bp, The Robertson Trust, TAQA and CNOOC International to deliver quality exhibits and programmes to enhance the overall visitor experience at the venue, as well through outreach work.
