A KEITH woman has plenty to celebrate in the Spanish sun after picking up a prestigious award in her adopted homeland.

Michelle Smith has been voted a hit in Spain.
Michelle Smith has been voted a hit in Spain.

Michelle Smith, co-owner of the Plough Inn, won the award for Best Compere at the annual Tenerife Enter-tainment Awards last week.

It is a much sought after title, with only seven of the hundreds of comperes on the island earning a nomination this year.

After a five-week long voting period, Michelle was named number one, and collected her prize at the awards ceremony in front of an audience of over 1,000 people at Tenerife’s Castillo San Miguel.

Michelle earned the recognition of her peers and the public for her work as a compere at the Thistle and Dragon bar in Los Cristianos.

Having worked at the bar both part-time and full-time since arriving in Tenerife more than five years ago, she has built up a large and loyal following of both locals and holidaymakers.

Michelle sings and hosts the entertainment at the popular cabaret bar six nights a week, and has been visited over the years by many a friendly face from Keith and elsewhere in the north-east.

She was delighted to earn the plaudit of being the island’s best compere, if a little shocked as well given the calibre of the other nominees.

Michelle said: "It was an honour just to be nominated, let alone to win the award. I really want to thank every person both at home and in Tenerife that took the time to vote for me, and all those that have supported me over the years."

After being presented with the award, Michelle was interviewed live on Oasis FM, Tenerife’s most popular English language radio station, before rejoining family and friends who attended the awards ceremony to lend their support on the day.

"Unsurprisingly, the celebrations continued well into the night at the Thistle and Dragon," said Michelle.
