PASSENGERS and crew escaped injury when a train hit a tree near Keith.
Strong winds had brought down the tree on Monday night (March 9) and the train, Scotrail’s 14.41 service from Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness, struck it at around 7 o’clock.
No injuries were reported by passengers on the five carriage train, but the driver was understandably shaken.
The train returned to Keith and passengers were transferred on to the 18.22 Aberdeen to Inverness service.
As a result of the incident, the 18.13 Inverness to Aberdeen service was also delayed at Elgin.
One of the passengers on the train, college student Becky Saunderson, from Elgin said: "It was pretty scary. We were five minutes out of Keith and all of a sudden there was a massive jolt. We heard things hitting the windows and the train came to a massive halt.
"The lights went out and then the emergency lighting came on. The front window of the train was badly damaged. When the train was stopped we could feel it moving from side to side with the strength of the wind."
