It is the first time in the competition’s 30 year history that a team from the Grampian region has taken the national title and Keith are only the second team from the north of Scotland to be crowned champions.

Coach David McKenzie said: "We were delighted to win the national title and there was plenty of celebrations.

"This was the fourth time Keith has competed in the competition and every time we have lost out to the Ayrshire team; they had become our main rivals.

"We had seven pulls on the day and we had to compete against Ayrshire three times. We ended up with the same points in the league so had to pull again and then we faced them in the final; we were really thrilled to win."

The Keith ladies qualified for the nationals following their victory in the north eliminations, held at this year’s Cornhill Highland Games.

The next engagement for the Keith ladies will be the Scottish Championships on Sunday, July 17, at Stonehaven. A trip to Wales then beckons for the UK Championships.

The gents team also competed at the Highland Show and finished a credible fourth place. They secured a place in the semi-finals where they were knocked out of the competition by Vale of Alford.

The Keith and Cornhill Young Farmers train together twice a week at Cornhill and the clubs are always looking for new pullers.

Mr McKenzie said: "The young farmers are aged 14-30 years but we also have senior teams. All ages, weights and abilities are welcome."
