PET owners in Keith are urged to be vigilant following a spate of seemingly deliberate cat poisonings in the area.
Alan Smith, a partner with Seafield Veterinary Group, said staff at the practice’s Keith and Buckie surgeries had seen a number of cats in recent weeks brought in by distraught owners who had found their pets collapsed and in a critical condition.
"Unfortunately the vast majority of these cats have not survived and had to be put down because they were too badly affected by what we believe is deliberate poisoning with antifreeze," he said.
"We have reported the cases to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and it is carrying out enquiries."
Ethylene glycol, a constituent of antifreeze, smells sweet to cats so they readily drink it.
It is extremely toxic to cats and only a small amount can kill.
Cats poisoned with antifreeze become extremely sick and most will die even with veterinary care.
Mr Smith urges owners to be vigilant and to report anyone they suspect of deliberate poisoning to the SSPCA on 03000 999 999.
