Local charity, Famine Relief for Orphans in Malawi (FROM Scotland) has announced that its latest fundraising events in Garioch have raised £1900.

Their soup and sandwich event held at Chapel of Garioch Village Hall raised £1500 while a performance by The Mario Jannetta Big Band in Logie Durno Hall raised a further £400.

As well as this, FROM Scotland has announced that the girls hostel at Mfera School in southern Malawi, which they have been fundraising for, is completed and is now open.

This facility will give 56 girls from outlying villages somewhere safe to stay during the school term, as most of these girls come from very poor families who cannot afford to pay for their daughter’s accommodation.

They will be able to stay in the hostel free of charge, allowing them to get an education, which would otherwise be denied to them.

Unusually for Malawi, it even has flushing toilets and showers.

Commenting, vice chairman of FROM Scotland, Lewis Taylor said: “We are always grateful for the support of the local community who turn out at our events every time.

“The hostel cost £40,000 and without the amazing support FROM receives locally, would not have been possible.

The group's next project is to sponsor as many of the girls as possible by supplying their food and other living costs, while they are at school, as in many cases, their families cannot afford the approximately £40 per term that this involves.

On this Mr Taylor said: “Any contribution to this would be most welcome, no matter how large or small.”
