TRIBUTES have been paid to the hard working and popular Huntly councillor Joanna Strathdee who died earlier this week.

Despite a long battle with cancer, extending over five years, she continued her council duties.

Warm tributes have poured in for Councillor Strathdee, who was elected to Aberdeenshire Council in 1999 and represented the Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford ward and was for a time the SNP group leader.

She was appointed vice-chairman of the Marr area committee in 2007 and again in 2012. She stood as an SNP candidate in Gordon in the 2005 General Election, finishing third, and was selected as a candidate in 2011 but stood down due to her illness.

Former First Minister Alex Salmond, the MP for Gordon, led the tributes to Councillor Strathdee – describing her as an exceptional councillor and an extraordinary human being.

Mr Salmond said: "She was totally dedicated to her beloved town of Huntly. She gave unstinting support to her community and party.

"She was a lady of courage and conviction and she will be missed by family, friends and colleagues, to whom she was a constant source of inspiration."

Councillor Moira Ingleby, chairman of the Marr area committee, said she would remember Joanna as an exceptional councillor and a genuine and valued friend.
