A COUPLE who have made and continue to make a huge contribution to life in the village of Rhynie were named as the 2018 Citizens of the Year by Huntly Rotary Club last weekend.

The top citizen scheme aims to give recognition to unsung heroes in Huntly and its rural hinterland and this year George and Phyllis Beverly were chosen for what was described as their unceasing and selfless work in the Rhynie community for many years.

After accepting the award, Phyllis said that she had been completely taken by surprise when she got the call to say they had been selected.

She said: "We would like to thank the people who nominated us but also point out that what we do is very much a team effort by a lot of people in the village.

"The work we do could not be done without help from others and they must share in this award with us."

The couple have a number of official roles in the village but can always be relied upon to step in when something needs done. It was this can do attitude that got Phyllis the job of coordinating the local team who took on board the cleaning of the public toilets in the village. She's organiser of the community hall, Fourteen and is a stalwart member of the WI.

George is a member of Tap o' Noth Community Council, is a director of Rhynie Charitable Trust and is actively involved in Rhynie Gala.

One nomination said: "If there is ever a job needing doing in Rhynie, you can always rely on George and Phyllis, either together or separately to be there.

"They are always first to arrive to organise the setting up of events and last to leave."

Both are involved in the planting scheme to help make the village look bright and well cared for.

The award comes with a cheque for £250 which will be shared by Car Aid Rhynie and the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).
