A BANK job with a difference has taken place in Huntly.

The first steps towards the redevelopment of the former Clydesdale Bank to create a restaurant saw the removal of two enormous safes from the building.

BD Services from Hatton of Fintray was sub contracted by Lumsden Security to remove the safes.

Contractor Brian Duguid told The Huntly Express: "They were two of the biggest safes we have ever removed. I would estimate they were about three tonnes each. We used a variety of methods to effectively manhandle them to the door where they could be reached by a crane and lifted on to the hi ab lorry. We have done a few of these jobs but the size of the two at Huntly was pretty unusual."

The main weight of the safes appears to have been in their doors and it is thought that the actual casing may have been filled with sand. The safes will be sold on for scrap.

Planning permission has been granted for the conversion of the building and it is hoped that the new venture will be up and running in time for the summer tourist season.
