Ellon Academy have been awarded the highest National Fairtrade award.

The school are recipients of the Fairtrade Achiever Award after years of hard work from the Academy’s Fairtrade Committee led by teacher Mark Paterson.

This award is recognition for the Academy fully embedding Fairtrade into the daily life and work to raise awareness in the local community.

An Fairtrade assessor said:“The main thing that shines through from your application is that Fairtrade is very much embedded as a major part of the ethos at Ellon Academy, I imagine that this has been developed over the several years that you have engaged with Fairtrade and had the Fair Achiever Award.

“This comes through in the very strong learning engagement that you show, across such a varied range of different curricular areas from those which are more commonly associated with Fairtrade such as Geography, Home Economics

and Business Studies to those where the links may be less obvious like Physics and English.

“This is hugely impressive and shows that there is good buy in from the teaching staff to Fairtrade and having this as a focus of learning.

“The other element of your application which is of particular note is the role of the steering group in driving your Fairtrade engagement at the school.”

While depute head teacher Kim Hall praised the remarkable achievement: “High praise indeed and a massive well done to all involved.
