Dinky Doctors - which has been recognised in the First Aid Champions category of this year's Scottish First Aid Awards - is an organisation linked with Ellon-based ABRRAS which delivers an interactive production to help youngsters learn important first aid skills in a fun and memorable way.

The training - which is delivered in three packages aimed at three to five years, five to eight years and eight to 12 years - was only set up last year and has already trained more than 3000 children.

The youngest group learn the very basics - calling 999 and opening the front door when they see an ambulance and the 4 B's - breathing, bleeding, bones and burns - in a session lasting around 45 minutes.

The children meet Dr Potty and Nurse and get to treat a large Teddy who has a case of Teddy Spots.

The other sessions include more advanced practices suitable for each age range, including how to use a defibrillator and carry out CPR to subjects such as Epilepsy and Diabetes.

To date training sessions have been held in schools, nurseries and playgroups as well as at birthday parties, dance schools, private childminder groups, youth groups and company event days.

Most recently, the Trinity Centre in Aberdeen made a shop unit into a Dinky hospital for the summer.

Chief executive of St Andrew’s First Aid Stuart Callison said “Dinky Doctors are doing a fantastic job at highlighting how important it is for children to be engaged with First Aid from such a young age.

"The fun and interactive nature of the shows is brilliant and they were a natural finalist in this year’s awards.”

This year’s Scottish First Aid Awards will be held in Glasgow on November 15 where 58 finalists shortlisted across 12 categories will be celebrated.
