A NEW poll revealed that almost half (45 per cent) of Scots are unsure of where to access free help with their debt.

Moreover, of those worried about their personal finances, over two-in-five (43 per cent) say that the Covid-19 pandemic has made it harder to talk about their financial worries with loved ones.

The survey, conducted by Savanta ComRes and commissioned by national debt charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP), aims to shed light on the financial landscape nearly one year on since lockdown began, and to signpost people to finding the free debt help services they need.

A StepChange charity report in June 2020 showed that 28 per cent of UK adults (approximately 14 million) have been negatively affected financially by the pandemic. The negative emotions associated with debt can make people too afraid to engage with creditors or to seek debt help. A further report by MoneyAdviceScotland concluded that 51 per cent of people across Scotland would rather go without essential spending before seeking debt help.

Emma Jackson, National Director of CAP Scotland, said: “It is nearly been a year since the pandemic started and we have all been impacted, whether socially, physically or financially.

"Many Scottish households, who has previously been managing are now facing much tougher times as incomes are lost or lowered dramatically.

“We want to say to everyone that if you are struggling with debt- do not suffer in silence. Problem debt can be scary and isolating but please don’t be afraid to reach out for help. With the end of furlough in sight – CAP is here to help you. You won’t be judged in any way, we will support you through this difficult time and enable you to begin your journey to becoming debt free.”

When not addressed, problem debt can quickly become unmanageable and overwhelming. CAP, Stepchange and Citizens Advice Scotland together are urging people to not delay in getting free debt help.

Christians Against Poverty in Scotland tackles the causes of debt and poverty through a range of expert group services. Job Clubs, Life Skills, Fresh Start and the CAP Money Course, provide adult financial education across Scotland through partnering with 75 churches.

The charity receives referrals of clients in complex, difficult circumstances including significant numbers of single parents and families with disabled adults and/or children. Despite the pandemic, CAP is still arranging client appointments and continuing to offer a lifeline to people in debt.
