AN SNP membership surge numbering thousands in just 24 hours has been hailed by a local MSP.

In the 24 hours following First Minister Nicola Sturgeon giving evidence to the committee investigating the handling of sexual harassment claims against her predecessor, Alex Salmond, the SNP have claimed 5000 new members have signed up

Welcoming the news, Banffshire and Buchan Coast SNP MSP Stewart Stevenson said: “The SNP-led Scottish Government has shown real leadership during the coronavirus pandemic and it is clear voters have recognised this and want to show their support by joining the party.

"While Boris Johnson’s government at Westminster have bumbled their way through the coronavirus pandemic and pursued a Brexit which has had a hugely detrimental impact on the UK including in for the fishing sector here in the north-east.”

Keith Brown MSP, the SNP’s campaign director, added: "In nine weeks, Scotland goes to the polls in the most important Scottish election in our lifetime.

"Gaining 5000 new members in the last 24 hours is a great way to start our campaign.

"On May 6, together we can show Boris Johnson, and the world, that Scotland’s votes matters, and our voice will be heard.

"Post-pandemic we can put into action our plans to recover, restore and rebuild.

"Plans that include gaining the full powers of an independent Scotland needed to create a country that’s fairer, a nation that truly cares."
