SNP Councillor Sonya Warren claimed the vacant Buckie seat with a landslide victory, scooping up 60% of the vote.

She joins fellow SNP Councillor Gordon McDonald, who was away on holiday during the final phase of the campaign, representing the Buckie area and Findochty.

"I’m really delighted that Sonya won," he said, "firstly because I persuaded her to stand in the first place and secondly as she was the ideal candidate for the job." Councillor Warren said: "It’s been a very interesting and busy time, with lots of paperwork.

"I’m really looking forward to getting involved in projects which affect the Buckie area."

Her election leaves the future of the local authority finely poised, with the SNP and Independent-non-aligned Conservative groupings both having 11 of the local authority’s 26 seats, the others being held by two Tories and two labour elected members.
