The past fortnight has seen one sneak-in theft on Blairdaff Street and a burglary at a house on Union Terrace in Buckpool.
There are, however, a number of simple measures people can take to help thwart any thieves who may be lurking around, as Buckie-based Sgt Teresa Clark explained.
“It’s important to remember that most break-ins are not the work of professional burglars but rather opportunist thieves who get into your home through an open or insecure door or window,” she told the ‘Advertiser’. “These thieves can be deterred by taking a few simple precautions.
“When you go out, make sure you lock all outside doors and check all the windows are closed. Many burglaries happen during the afternoon, so always lock up even if you’re just popping out for a few minutes.
“Remember to lock garage doors and windows, especially if it is attached to and has access to the house. Also, ladders and garden tools should be locked away as they can be useful to the opportunist burglar.
“Keys should be kept in a safe place. The first places a burglar will look for your door keys are under the mat, in a flower pot or on a piece of string through the letter box. Never leave any keys in the locks or lying around the house.
“If your out for the evening, leave a front room light - not the hall - on and perhaps put the radio on, too. Draw the curtains and leave a small gap at the top so you can see the light form outside to create the impression there’s someone at home.”
