THE return of Grampian Pride this year has been welcomed by a local MSP.

The celebration of equality and inclusion took place on Sunday, October 24 in Aberdeen and was organised by Four Pillars LGBT+ Charity, in partnership with various organisations across the Grampian area.

Karen Adam, MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, has hailed the event and lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating the organisers for their hard work and commitment.

The MSP, who was raised in a same sex household in the 70s and 80s, has been a vocal ally of the LGBT+ community, recently winning the LGBT Political Leadership of the Year award at the 2021 Proud Scotland Awards.

She said: “I know over 2000 people across the north-east attended Grampian Pride’s recent winter parade, coming together as a loving and supportive community.

“The work of Four Pillars in organising this year's event with all the extra difficulties that Covid brings to managing a large scale event was nothing short of remarkable, and Four Pillars, Deejay Bullock, and all the volunteers involved deserve the highest praise possible.

“I know the LGBTQI+ community to be the most compassionate and loving community I’ve ever been a part of so I was keen to recognise that in this motion too. I now look forward to attending and welcoming Grampian Pride 2022 back to its full glory on May 28 next year!”

Ms Adam's motion reads: That the Parliament celebrates the return of Grampian Pride, organised by Four Pillars, which is an LGBT+ organisation that does fantastic work to support people across the north east of Scotland; notes that the 2021 Winter Pride Parade will be held on October 24, 2021; appreciates that this year's theme will be remembering the past, celebrating the present, and embracing the future; understands that, for some, Pride is not only a celebration but continues to be a protest for further LGBT+ rights and inclusion; commends Four Pillars, its staff and volunteers, and everyone involved, for ensuring the event is safe and welcoming for all who would like to take part; looks forward to the return of Grampian Pride, and passes on its best wishes for continued success in the future."
