AN independent report has cleared police of any wrong-doing following a Boxing Day pursuit on the Buckie to Fochabers road.

Issued by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) last Wednesday, the document is the result of an investigation into a road traffic collision which followed the brief pursuit after Buckie man Jodie Cormack (28) was spotted driving dangerously at high speed.

A number of people, including two young children, were injured following the incident on the A98 Fochabers to Buckie road on December 26, and Cormack subsequently charged in connection. The circumstances of the incident were reported to the PIRC as is standard procedure in collisions of this nature.

It has been ruled that the driver was “solely responsible for the crash”.

Local Area Commander Chief Inspector Norman Stevenson said: “Above all, my thoughts are with all those who were injured on the night – it would have been a very traumatic experience for everyone involved, and one which could have been avoided was it not for the reckless and dangerous actions of the driver in question.

"He is currently serving a prison sentence and received a driving ban.

“Police Scotland’s priority is to protect the public and keep people safe. I acknowledge the officers appropriate response on the night.”

Cormack, who lives in Milton Drive, Buckie was jailed at Elgin Sheriff Court on March 6.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Ian Cruickshank said it was "one of the most horrendous examples of dangerous driving that I have ever heard".
