Run by local Salvation Army officers Bruce and Isobel Smith, the food bank has risen to the challenges placed on it during the year of Covid, which has seen many living on reduced incomes due to furlough or redundancy or having to stay indoors and shield from the virus.

Major Bruce Smith paid tribute to all those who have supported the dedicated band of volunteers at the food bank.

He said: "As we reach the end of another financial year Buckie food bank has experienced its most demanding and also most fulfilling year.

"In year 2019/20 we supplied 386 parcels to feed 878 people for a minimum of 2634 days. In 2020/21 we supplied 1458 parcels to feed 2985 people for a minimum of 8,955 days.

"The support from the community has been incredible and the dedication of the volunteers who have made this possible is truly impressive. Demand for our services still remains very high."

The food bank is open from 11am to 2.30pm on Tuesdays at the Salvation Army hall on New Street Buckie. Donations can also be handed over then.

Anyone who feels they need help from the food bank should call (01542) 832790 and leave a message por message via the local Salvation Army Facebook page.

The volunteer team's stalwart efforts have been recognised by the Lord Lieutenants of Banffshire and Moray, who awarded them a Letter of Commendation in October last year.
