Moray EU citizens urged to sign up for settlement scheme

By Alan Beresford

A BUCKIE councillor is urging local EU and EEA citizens to make sure they are signed up for the British Government's EU Settlement Scheme.

EU citizens in Moray are being urged to signed up to the EU Settlement Scheme as soon as possible.

In the event that the UK ends the Brexit transition period without a deal, EU citizens will have to be signed up for the scheme or potentially face losing their right to live and work in the country.

Councillor Sonya Warren said the sooner those affected signed up, the sooner they would have peace of mind over their future in Britain.

"Our figures for Moray are quite low so far," she said.

"It's my understanding that we have in the region of 3000 European citizens living in Moray yet so far only one third have signed up.

"It worries me as you are never sure how long it could take in another few months as the deadline draws nearer.

"Certainly, it would be much better and re-assuring for EU citizens to know they had everything done to ensure their right to live in Scotland."

More information on how to complete the simple online application is available on the council's website at www.moray.gov.uk

The deadline for applications to the scheme is December 31, 2020.
