A BUCKIE golf club's scheme to reduce its reliance on mains water to keep its greens and fairways in tip top condition has been awarded a sizeable grant.

Buckpool Golf Club's borehole water project has just been handed £15,750 from SUEZ Communities Trust to expand their existing small facility, which provides a limited source of water for the golf course.

However, current demand is outstripping supply from this natural source, a situation exacerbated by the area again experiencing some if its lowest

rainfall since 1972. This requires top ups from mains water supplied by Scottish Water.

The project will seek to increase the volume supplied from the borehole, and provide a larger storage facility for this.

Captain of Buckpool Golf Club, John Adam, said: “We as a club are concerned that we are requiring more and more water to ensure that our course, and in particular, that our greens are maintained in the best possible condition.

"Lack of capacity from our existing system meant that this additional water is supplied from the Scottish Water mains supply.

"This water has been heavily processed as potable water which is considered a very limited and expensive resource. Yet here we were, using this water to pour onto our course!

"Increasing the flow rate from our existing borehole by installing a more modern pump and increasing the size of our storage tank, will ensure that our requirement will be more adequately met from a natural renewable source.

"This project forms part the on-going commitment by Buckpool Golf Club to achieve the Scottish Government Energy Reduction target. A previous grant from SUEZ Communities Trust allowed the club to insulate the roofing area and instal LED lighting to the clubhouse which has successfully reduced our

electrical and gas energy requirements.

"We are indeed very grateful to the support that SUEZ Communities Trust has given to us.”

Marek Gordon, chairman of SUEZ Communities Trust, added: “SUEZ Communities Trust provides funding awards through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund.

"We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Buckpool Golf Club.”

SUEZ Communities Trust is an independent funding body set up in 1997 to provide funding through the Landfill Communities Fund and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. The trust supports projects using tax credits donated by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK.

Funds from the trust improve vital public recreation facilities such as village halls, community centres, sport, heritage, green spaces and play areas.
