A 32-strong band of youngsters – the youngest aged just six – made their way to Elgin Town Hall last Monday evening to join five other primaries from the region to compete in the Frisson Foundation Moray Schools Glee contest. Last year, in the inaugural Moray Glee competition, the Findochty kids took the Esprit de Glee trophy for being the team who most got into the spirit of the competition, but this time around they claimed the top prize for their song and dance routines.

Each team was given a song to perform and dance to – Light Up – and then asked to perform one of their choice, in Findochty's case Pink's What About Us?

The victory means they qualify for the national finals on June 14 in Dundee.

One of those delighted with the youngsters' triumph was Findochty headteacher Dawn teacher, who praised their talent and dedication.

"It's quite an achievement for them all, they were magnificent," she said.

"When it was announced we were the winners the children just erupted, as did the staff and parents who were there, we're all so proud of them. I felt they had something different in their performances and they were really fantastic.

"The choir is mainly made up of last year's P1s plus some other children who said came along and said they'd love to be involved. They meet every Thursday after school and in the run up to the competition they were meeting at lunchtimes, too.

"They played a large part in creating the choreography and also designed their own competition T-shorts. It's been a great experience in teamwork, dedication and commitment for both the children and staff, plus they just love singing and performing!"

Now that the choir are in the finals, the work all starts again to learn two new songs and design the choreography to go with them. Fund-raising is also on the cards to help pay for the trip to Dundee and other costs.

Watching them sweep their was to the Moray title was local councillor Sonya Warren, who also chairs Moray Council's children and young people's services committee.

She commented: "They were amazing, you could tell they wanted to win.

"The Findochty kids put on an amazing show, singing so well with great choreography, too.

"It was a tough competition with all the schools raising the bar in terms of the overall quality of performances making it a wonderful evening's entertainment.

"I'm so proud of Findochty Primary School, they were a credit to their community both through their performance and their behaviour and attitude."

Councillor Warren also congratulated Bishopmill Primary in Elgin who won the Esprit de Glee trophy.

The competition is run nationally by Frisson Foundation which seeks to widen opportunities for children and get youngsters singing.
