Erin Wood crew lucky to be alive

THE crew of a local oil tanker narrowly escaped with their lives after a collision with a container ship off Peterhead.

Both crewmen aboard Northern Oil’s Erin Wood launched their liferaft as a precaution after the collision, four miles off the port town on Saturday, August 29.

The Lintmill firm’s CEO David Wood said it was a “miracle” the crewmen survived and hailed their actions as the tanker quickly became waterlogged and in danger of capsizing as rescuers rushed to her aid.

She was carrying 132,000 litres of marine diesel at the time of the incident, with the risk of an environmental disaster.

Mr Wood said: “Her hull was ripped below the waterline on the port side and she started taking on water, with a lot of damage done to the rear of the vessel."
