ELECTION 2021: SNP set for overall majority, Greens to double seats, says Survation poll

AN opinion poll has put the SNP on course for an overall majority and the Greens set to almost double their number of seats.

The Survation poll for The Sunday Post shows First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's party being elected to govern a record-breaking fourth time taking 67 seats, an overall majority of five.

There was good news in the survey for the Greens, which would jump from having six seats at Holyrood to 11.

Scottish Labour's new leader Anwas Sarwar will no doubt take cheers from the poll, which shows the party leapfrogging the Tories into second place with 24 seats. The Conservatives, meanwhile, are predicted to shed nine seats from 2016 to 22.

It is a case of as you were for the Liberal Democrats according to Survation, which predicts the party would emerge with five seats, as was the case in the 2016 vote.

In terms of constituency vote share, Survation gives the SNP 50 per cent, well ahead of both Labour and the Conservatives tied neck and neck on 21 per cent. The Liberal Democrats would take seven per cent.

In the regional list, the SNP are again ahead but by a much smaller margin with 35 per cent. Labour enjoy a slight lead over the Tories – 22 per cent to 20 per cent – while the Greens break into double figures with 10 per cent.

As with the constituency vote, the Liberal Democrats take seven per cent.

The poll does not make for good reading for the smaller parties standing on the list, including Alex Salmond's Alba Party. Since its dramatic entry into the campaign, Alba have consistently failed to launch in a number of consecutive polls, which has continued with Survation projecting three per cent support.

This makes the prospect of Alba returning any seats unlikely, although the margin of error in polls could make this difficult to call.
