CONSERVATIVE group councillors on Moray Council are calling for further work around a 1:1 device model for school students in the region.

It follows on from successful models being adopted in other local authorities in Scotland which puts students and teachers at the heart of learning through technology.

Conservative group leader Councillor Tim Eagle (Buckie) said: “The conservative group raised the idea of a 1:1 device model in previous children's committees and had spoken with officers about adopting this model prior to lockdown.

"What was noticed across the country during lockdown was that some students had either limited or no access to the technology they needed to complete school work online. What we have always wanted is a top class education in Moray with equity in provision across the area.”

“Giving pupils a device such as a Chromebook allow students to learn anytime, anywhere and supports a digital culture across the district. The use of technology has been proven in other trials to enhance learning and given students the resources to guide their own learning

“As we recover from coronavirus now is the time to be thinking of putting these ideas into place and we fully support the council coming forward with plans around this as we discuss funding from the digital inclusion funds from national government".

Group colleague Councillor Claire Feaver (Forres) added: “I think this potentially will be very beneficial allowing teachers to deliver an education fit for the 21st century.

“However, the disappointingly slow roll-out of the R100 broadband programme by the Scottish Government means that not all families will be able to access this in Moray and we should make sure that we lobby the Scottish Government to ensure there is equality of provision."
