High demand for garages and garage sites has resulted in waiting list, with the council making a plea for current lease holders to be considerate.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the local authority said: "We charge rent for garages quarterly and garage sites annually.

"If you haven’t yet paid the rent due for your garage or garage site rent, please spare a thought for those on our waiting list, who would be delighted to be offered a lease and pay their rent when it is due.

"If you're struggling to pay your rent please let us know as soon as possible. You may want to consider ending your lease if you can no longer afford to pay your rent or if you no longer need your garage or garage site. Please phone 0300 123 4566.

"Maintaining and repairing garages and garage sites is costly and the rent you pay is critical to allow us to do this. Please help us to help you, and pay your rent on time."

In the Buckie area, Moray Council own 369 garage/garage sites, in Elgin 525, in Forres 114 and in Keith 143.
