Buckie and District Community Council (BDCC) had plenty to celebrate when they were selected as one of the Co-op's Local Community Fund causes.

Under the scheme, Co-op members who choose the community council as their selected cause and buy selected own brand products and services will see the firm make a donation to them.

BDCC are part of the scheme for a year, running until October 2021.

BDCC chairman Kevin McKay said: "This is great news for us and the other local good causes who have been selected by the Co-op to benefit from the Local Community Fund.

"It is just the start for us, though. We've a lot more fund-raising to do as half the stuff the community council has been doing and is planning to do is completely new territory for us.

"We've been doing a lot of work with the Buckie Central East Local Outcomes Improvement Plan (LOIP) and Buckie Area Forum and it's all really starting to come together. There's been a lot of work done, too with other groups, which I think has been accelerated since Covid.

"In terms of the LOIP, the money raised through the Co-op we'd like to use to extend the reach of the services it offers. It is limited to a set geographical area and we'd like to expand this, initially to Buckpool. One of the things we'd love to do is expand providing carry out meals to sheltered housing to Buckpool.

"We've got lots of other plans in the offing, too."

Mr McKay went on to pay tribute to the team at the community council, making special mention of Morag Stewart and Christine Allan for their work with LOIP. He also lauded the efforts of Moray Council community support officer Tracey Rae.

The community council will receive two payments from the fund, the first coming next April with the second and final one being handed over in October.
