THE men’s and women’s triathlons are expected to be among the most exciting events for spectators at this summer’s London Olympics.

British athletes – including world champion Alistair Brownlee – are among the medal favourites, and will enjoy a massive home support for the swimming, cycling and running stages.

It is a sport that has really caught the public imagination in recent years, and there has been a huge increase in the number of participants.

However, that momentum is being lost in Aberdeenshire, it was claimed this week.

Banff’s leading triathlete, Terry Christie (38), said he was "deeply disappointed" to see a blossoming sport suffering from a reduction in support in the North-east.

The Aberdeenshire triathlon series run by the council, which until recently had 10 annual events, has now been cut to just four.
