A NORTH-east MSP has backed a campaign to shop local ahead of the festive period.

Farmers and crofters work year-round to provide the produce many enjoy over Christmas and New Year.

NFU Scotland asked the public to support those hard-working farmers and crofters – many of whom will work on Christmas Day – and buy local. And MSP Peter Chapman visited a local farm to see how its turkeys are produced.

He has also pointed consumers in the direction of Inverurie's AK Poultry and Barra Bronzes, Maryfield Farm Poultry of Banchory, and Tullochbeg Turkeys of Huntly, among local providers.

He said: "I really enjoyed my visit to Lochend of Barra to see the great work Craig Michie is doing at Barra Bronzes turkey farm.

"The birds look superb and have the run of the farm where they forage for apples, pears and insects.

"Craig tells that the secret to their distinctive flavour is letting them run free and feeding them the best of oats.

"I would encourage as many people as possible to support Scottish farming and shop local for their turkey this Christmas."
