FREEZING COLD, jellyfish-infested waters will test all age groups of swimmers in the annual Banff Bay swimming event.

Members of the 2011 committee have set the date for the community open water swim between Banff and Macduff harbours.

Sea state permitting, the mile-long swim in the North Sea will take place at noon on Saturday, August 13, with a back-up date of the following Saturday. Registration and briefings on August 13 begin at 11am.

Rhoda Mitchell, one of the organisers, said: "In recent years the swim has been well supported by swimmers of mixed abilities and ages. Some set themselves the challenge of racing against the onset of hypothermia in temperatures of around 14 degrees to be among the first to cross, while others make it a personal challenge to go the distance in chilly waters.

"We take swimmers’ safety very seriously and have had no problems in recent years."
