RESCUE workers called out to an incident near the mouth of River Spey made the grim discovery of a body.
A multi-agency team of emergency services responded to a report on Tuesday afternoon at around 2pm that a body had been sighted on one of the small islands in the area.
Fire crews from the local Fochabers station and Elgin, including water rescue units from Elgin and Inverness, attended and were joined by colleagues from Police Scotland. It is believed that the body was recovered by the water rescue teams.
Coastguard teams from Buckie, Portsoy and Burghead were scrambled with Buckie's RNLI lifeboat also launched.
An emergency services presence remained at the scene into the evening.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Officers were called to the scene following a reported sighting of a possible body within the water.”
At the time of going to print no identification of the body – which is believed to have been in the water for some time – had been made by public by the police nor whether there was any suspicion of foul play.
A Coastguard spokesman commented: "This was a police-led inquiry and we were assisting them.
"Our resources were all released by 7pm.”
A spokesman for Buckie RNLI added: "Buckie lifeboat was launched at 2.16pm in order to assist with reports of a body in the water near the mouth of the River Spey.
"It proved too rough to launch her Y-boat daughter craft and the crew stood by until they were stood down about 4pm."
A section of the River Spey, the fastest flowing in Scotland, was the scene recently for a major rescue exercise involving personnel from the Fire Service, Coastguard and Ambulance Service.
